Five Ways to Wear the Blazer

When you’re on a budget and looking for a jacket you can wear with different outfits, a blazer is a key piece for your wardrobe. It can be worn in so many ways, and is the perfect item to help you transition an outfit from day to night.

While most people might associate blazers with office wear, they really can mix easily into your everyday wardrobe, and they sharpen up an otherwise casual outfit.

When picking your perfect blazer though, it’s a good idea to think about the general colour palate of your current wardrobe.

This textured stripe blazer is a great choice for me. With its monochrome base, it goes with so many different outfits, and the jersey fabric means it will transition easily into autumn too (even though it feels like summer has only just arrived…) Perhaps most importantly, a jersey blazer doesn’t wrinkle or crease as easily as a traditional wool one, so it’s normally good to go if you’re in a hurry.

To help you picture it, I’ve styled five very different looks all with this great blazer.

I like to call this look Keeping it Casual. The weekend may be your time to relax, but if you wear your blazer with a loose blouse in a light colour, you’ll look relaxed, but you won’t feel like you’re still in your PJ’s (although it’s almost as comfortable!).

To get the look, leave your shirt untucked, and partner it with boyfriend-fit jeans and a simple pair of flat pumps, and you can’t go wrong. And if you switch your flats for heels, you’ve got the perfect transitional outfit too.

The blazer and heels add a smart twist to an otherwise casual look. Add a simple black tote bag and you’ll have an outfit that’s perfect for shopping with the kids or enjoying Sunday brunch with the family (minus the heels, of course).

Maybe a Friday Night Out is something that doesn’t happen as often as you’d like. Or maybe it happens too often, and buying a new outfit each time simply isn’t an option. Thankfully, you can change up your outfit by adding an element of glam with your blazer. In this case, I’ve used the blazer to dress up a plain black slinky cami vest, skinny jeans (in dark indigo denim) and a killer pair of heels.

If you roll up the sleeves of your blazer a bit, you’ll give it a dressier appearance. Add a statement necklace and a pop of colour to your lips for a great look for drinks with the girls, or a date night.

When you want to Dress to Impress without over doing it, blazers work really well over dresses. This denim version is your perfect partner. Nip its casual shape in at the waist with its tie belt, and keep it casual with a pair of pretty ballet pumps and an oversized tote bag for your daytime essentials, or add heels and a clutch bag for an evening look.

Blazers are known for being the perfect office wear, and there’s a good reason why. They can add just the right dose of formality for the office, but when nipped-in at the waist, they can show off your shape while keeping your office look sharp. Team this jersey blazer with a sheer white shirt, tailored trousers and a leather tote for perfect office chic. Or wear it with a black pencil skirt for another office look that’s perfect for that important meeting or interview.

The look can still work if your office dress code is more casual. Just switch the pencil skirt out for a pair of skinny jeans and you’ll have the perfect balance.

Finally, ladies, don’t be afraid to wear your blazer with some colour – even if the fabric of the blazer is textured or patterned. I tried a pop of red underneath this striped blazer: a red chiffon layered top, skinny jeans and a simple pair of black flats give a bold twist on a casual outfit. And matching in your handbag or lippy with the colour pop is a brilliant way to liven up a simple blazer. This look is perfect for a special event or day out.
