Learning To Layer

It’s never a breeze, dressing for winter. You’ve got all manner of weather conditions to contend with, on top of which you’ve got to try to walk the fine line between being warm and looking good.

Not to mention the fact that you often have to worry about dressing for inside and out, as you go from freezing platform to warm train, or in and out of warm shops and cafes. No one wants to be carrying around a bulky coat, so layering is the way to go. Let George show you how to layer up for a warm and stylish winter:

Add A Snood Or Scarf

The scarf is a winter staple and there’s one for each outfit at George, from printed or faux fur scarves that can be worn with even the dressiest eveningwear, to classic knitted scarves that go great with bobble hats and mittens. However, the new neckwear on the block is the snood, and we think the George Thick Knit Snood combines the best of both worlds to make it a wear-with-anything accessory. We also love a thick patterned scarf tucked into a coat belt to make a snug style statement.

Cosy Up In A Coatigan

Coatigan…cardi-coat…whatever you choose to call it, it’s a genius invention for indoor-to-outdoor dressing. We love a festive Fairisle Knit Cardigan over a red roll-neck, jeans and boots for winter. It’ll take you out walking, on shopping trips, to the pub – you name it. Just make sure you take an umbrella in case of rain!

A Gorgeous Gilet

The gilet is amazing for throwing on over a fitted sweater, top or shirt, and we think faux fur is the perfect addition to any winter wardrobe. Cool enough to be worn with jeans, but glam enough to go over eveningwear, a super snugly furry gilet will look and feel fantastic.

The Hero Vest

The humble vest is a real hero item in our eyes, as it can be worn on its own or under pretty much anything to add warmth. Our heat retaining vests are an absolute must when the weather begins to bite. We’ve got a range of styles at George, including lace trimmed and simple scoop neck, to keep you cosy under your clothes. We’ve also got simple camisole vests for just £2.75 or two for £4, so you can stock your drawers with a range of classic colours.

Basic Base Layers

Every winter capsule wardrobe should have basic base layers at its core, as you can easily build different looks around them. We’ve got long sleeved and short sleeved t-shirts and tops in a rainbow of colours, patterns and necklines, so you’ll never be stuck for a simple base layer to throw on in the morning. We love putting a basic black top with this season’s check, leather or faux suede A-line skirt, to really let the skirt make the style statement. Or add warmth to your top half with a cool knitted waistcoat belted at the waist.

Rock The Roll

The high neck jumper is having a fashion moment this winter, and it’s the perfect piece to layer. Keeping the neck covered means that there’s no need to carry a scarf, and the form-fitting styles go great underneath cardigans, gilets and jackets. You can also wear it with everything from trendy skirts to your basic denims and it’s guaranteed to look great.

Layering really is the secret to good dressing during the coldest season, so pile on your clever clothing combos for cosy outfits that look fantastic.
