Give your children an amazing place all of their own this summer with a garden playhouse.

There’s nothing better for adding a bit of fun to your garden than a playhouse. Whether it’s a tiny toy house for your toddler, a complex cabin for the kids or a glammed up garden shed, these outdoor huts give your kids a first taste of a space that is all their own. One minute it’s a hideaway, the next it’s a home, then it’s an HQ for heroes!Maybe you’ve got a shed that only spiders get any joy out of? If so, summer is the perfect time to give it a new lease of life. And it’s not just when it’s finished that the fun starts. Getting your kids involved in the building, renovating or decorating of their new hideaway is a brilliant way to encourage their creativity and a sense of pride.

We set blogger Emma from ‘Mummy…Mummy…MUM!’ a challenge to pick one of our outdoor buildings and to then turn it into the perfect playhouse for her three children. Emma was more than keen to take part, seeing as their existing playhouse was looking a little sad.

“Seven years ago we built our first playhouse,” Emma says. “It’s been a secret hideaway for various superheroes, princesses and excitable children, but it inevitably aged and replacing it was top of my summer improvement wish list for this year.”

Emma opted for the Fairwood Haddon Summerhouse which she felt seemed a “more grown-up alternative to a traditional playhouse.” Once her husband had done the building work, she then enlisted the help of her three children – Zak, Sydney and Hannah – to turn it from standard shed to perfect playhouse. Sydney and Hannah created a little reading corner, with a throw, some alphabet cushions and a rug, while their grandfather contributed a beautiful personal touch in the shape of a table that he upcycled himself.

“I’m thrilled with the end result,” Emma says, “and even more so by how easy the whole process was. It’s transformed the look of our garden and really inspired us to spruce up the rest before summer really starts.”

Sprucing up your shed or decorating a playhouse for your own children is the perfect way to kick off the summer and get the whole family involved. Bunting instantly brightens up the space and is a great homemade addition that is easy enough for the kids to do themselves. Oil cloth fabric doubles up brilliantly as a bright and durable wallpaper that will totally transform any summerhouse or shed. Or take a leaf out of Zak, Sydney and Hannah’s grandad’s book and upcycle your old furniture and give it a new lease of life in a playhouse.
