Maternity Fashion Tips For Mums-To-Be

For many mums-to-be, the struggle is real when it comes to finding flattering maternity clothes. Not only do you need to work out how to dress an unfamiliar (and growing!) bump, but the clothing you own also has to be supportive.
Considering everything else you have to think about during your pregnancy, making time to invest in stylish maternity outfits can seem like a step too far. This is where we come in to play!
From essential dresses and comfortable fabrics to maternity bras, our fashion tips will ensure you and your bump feel your best from the first trimester until the last.

When Should I Start Wearing
Maternity Clothes?

There’s no “right” time to start wearing maternity clothes. While your friends might have worn their everyday clothes up until the last minute, your sister might have been in her maternity leggings from the get-go.
The important thing to remember is that no two bodies experience pregnancy the same way. Since it all comes down to personal preference, you’ll know when you’re ready to stock up on maternity dresses, breathable maternity nightwear and belly belts. Trust your instincts!

Start With The Basics

All great maternity wardrobes start with the basics. This means good-quality maternity bras and briefs. After all, your maternity lingerie will set the tone for how comfortable you feel day-to-day.
If you’re choosing not to wear a specific maternity bra during your first trimester, we recommend opting for a non-wired style that won’t be too restrictive. As your ribcage expands in your second trimester, you can then move onto wearing a specialised maternity bra with wide straps and multiple hook and eye fastenings.
Picking discreet shades, like nude and black, will ensure that your bra suits the majority of your outfits.

Stick To Stretchy Fabrics

The number one question you should ask yourself when you’re shopping for maternity clothing is “does it stretch?”.
As well as providing extra comfort, items made from stretchy fabric will grow with you and last throughout your pregnancy.
Think black elasticated leggings, maternity tops made from super-soft fabric and nightdresses with plenty of give.

Don’t Follow The Trends

As tempting as it is to follow the trends, try to remember that you’ll only be wearing these items for nine months.
With this in mind, there’s no point spending a fortune on the latest styles. Instead, opt for timeless pieces like button-down blouses, maxi dresses and plain T-shirts.
This tactic also means that you can re-use your maternity clothing later down the line or gift them to friends.

Say Yes To Jeans

While many people believe that jeans are a no-go during a pregnancy (“too uncomfortable”), this doesn’t have to be the case. It’s just a matter of finding the perfect pair.
As well as searching for maternity jeans with elasticated inserts, go for a wearable and classic wash, like black or blue jeans.
Whether you team them with camisoles or cosy jumpers, jeans make a welcome alternative to the usual leggings combo.

Go Glam

As your body changes, it can be difficult to get into the spirit of dressing up. Even so, making time to enjoy getting ready can add some normalcy to your routine and help you feel more like yourself.
To stay in style without sacrificing any support, try a form-fitting black dress.
Just as comfy as your joggers, this design will bring some glamour to your maternity outfits.

Accessorise, Accessorise,

One brilliant way to transform your maternity wardrobe is to make the most of accessories.
Alongside refreshing your favourite maternity outfits for different occasions, bags, scarves and hair accessories are all budget-friendly methods for staying on top of the latest trends.
A win-win!

Keep Comfy

Working out how to master maternity dressing can seem intimidating, especially for first-time mums. Luckily, focusing on keeping comfy is the best plan of action.
From over-sized tops and culottes to loose dresses and flat shoes, pick clothing you feel relaxed wearing and you can’t go wrong.
